Survey will gauge gas safety awareness
Published on September 30, 2025
An upcoming survey will measure safety awareness of natural gas among Los Alamos County community members. It will also give insight into the effectiveness of natural gas safety outreach efforts of the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU).
Called the GOAL survey, short for Gas Overall Awareness Level, it is a product of the American Public Gas Association and will be conducted starting on Wednesday, October 1. Natural gas customers and non-customers will be polled to determine their gas safety knowledge.
Participants’ answers will be benchmarked and results will be used to ensure DPU is effectively educating the community on the potential dangers of natural gas, as required by Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Regulations 49 CFR 192.616 and American Petroleum Institute (API) Recommended Practice RP 1162.
Beginning Wednesday, an independent polling company will conduct automated calls from the phone number (505) 487-8155. If you haven’t received a call but would like to take the short survey, you can dial the same number to participate by phone. If you would like to take the survey online, please visit https://ladpu.com/GOAL.
The survey is expected to remain open for at least two weeks while the polling company aims to get at least 400 surveys for statistical validity.
