Perry Weather Storm Alert System

Lightning.jpg

Los Alamos County has partnered with Perry Weather to install Weather Stations (WS) and Outdoor Warning Systems (OWS) at key park locations. These systems monitor real-time weather and provide lightning alerts, keeping park visitors informed about potential safety risks. This advanced system provides alerts when lightning is detected within 10 miles, helping park visitors take appropriate safety measures during weather events.

How It Works:

When lightning is detected within 10 miles of any equipped park, the Perry Weather system automatically activates to alert visitors with both audio and visual warnings.

  • A 10-second horn blast
  • A flashing strobe light
  • A public address message instructing visitors to seek shelter

Once no lightning has been detected for 30 minutes, the system issues an all-clear:

  • Three short horn blasts
  • The strobe light turns off

This ensures park visitors are informed when it is safe to resume outdoor activities.

Perry Weather System:

Outdoor Warning Systems (OWS):

Located at Overlook Park and North Mesa Sports Complex, these systems monitor a wide range of weather conditions, including: lightning detection, wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), heat index, temperature, precipitation, humidity, evapotranspiration, wind speed and direction, and wind chill.

Weather Stations (WS):

Installed at Piñon Splash Pad, Ashley Pond Park, and the Golf Course, these stations track weather conditions such as temperature, wind, rainfall, and more, providing real-time data for better safety decision-making.

All Weather Stations (WS) are connected to the Outdoor Warning System (OWS) to ensure consistent and accurate lightning detection across all park locations.

  • Ashley Pond Park and the Golf Course WS unit will communicate with the North Mesa Sports Complex OWS.
  • The Piñon Splash Pad WS unit will communicate with the Overlook Park OWS.

When lightning is detected within 10 miles of an OWS site, the system triggers audible and visual alerts. The alert remains active for 30 minutes from the most recent lightning strike, with a visible countdown timer showing when it is safe to resume outdoor activities.

Public Engagement:

QR codes posted at each park provide access to site specific Weather Widgets offering real-time updates on current weather conditions and remaining time until the all clear.

Emergency Management:

The system also serves as an emergency tool, capable of broadcasting critical announcements during severe weather or emergencies.

Hours of Operation

The Perry Weather Outdoor Warning Systems (OWS) and Weather Stations (WS) at each park operates according to the individual park and are adjusted seasonally based on daylight and scheduled activities. This ensures the system is active during times of high public use.
