Los Alamos E-Bike Regulations
Our Trail Policy
Los Alamos County allows Class 1 e-bikes on our trail system. These pedal assisted bikes operate similarly to traditional bicycles and are permitted for use.
However, please note that Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes are not permitted on our trails. We ask trail users to respect this rule to ensure the safety, preservation, and enjoyment of the trail systems for all.
What is the Existing New Mexico Law for E-Bikes?
In 2023, New Mexico passed legislation regulating the use of electric-assisted bicycles (e-bikes). Senate Bill 69, which became law on July 1, 2023, defines and governs the use of e-bikes under the New Mexico Statutes, Chapter 66, Motor Vehicles, Articles 1 and 3.
- Definition of E-Bikes: E-bikes are defined as " electric assisted bicycles" and are categorized into three classes:
- Class 1: Pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.
- Class 2: Throttle-assisted, with a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.
- Class 3: Pedal-assist only, with a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph and equipped with a speedometer.
- Where You Can Ride:
- Class 1 e-bikes are allowed on bicycle and pedestrian paths where traditional bicycles are permitted, unless local jurisdictions choose to prohibit them.
- Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes are not allowed on bicycle or pedestrian paths unless the path is part of a street or highway, or unless local government specifically allows their use.
- Age Restrictions:
- Riders under the age of 16 are not allowed to operate a Class 3 e-bike. However, they may ride as passengers.
- Labeling and Equipment:
- All Class 3 e-bikes must have a functioning speedometer.
- Any e-bike sold or distributed in New Mexico must have a label indicating the class of the e-bike and its top assisted speed.
