The Los Alamos County Public Works Department, along with the Transportation Board and Community Services Department, invites residents to participate in the upcoming "Bike to Work" event on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

Cyclists are encouraged to visit the Energizer Station located at the northwest corner of Diamond Drive and Canyon Road from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. Here, participants can enjoy refreshments, snacks, and receive bike-related giveaways.

According to the League of American Bicyclists, nearly 40% of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, highlighting that biking is a practical and enjoyable mode of transportation. The County encourages everyone to consider biking to work or to simply explore cycling for leisure, fitness, or commuting purposes.

To enhance the biking experience, Public Works staff recommend the following tips for community members:

  • Have your bicycle inspected by a local bike shop.

  • Always wear a helmet for head protection in case of an accident.

  • Ride in the right-most lane that corresponds with your direction of travel.

  • Obey all stop signs, traffic signals, and lane markings.

  • Look before changing lanes or signaling a turn; indicate your intentions clearly before acting.

  • Increase your visibility by wearing bright clothing and being predictable in your movements.

Motorists are reminded of the County's "5 Foot to Pass" ordinance for cyclists. This regulation states that when a driver approaches or passes a person on a bicycle, they must do so with caution, at a reasonable speed, and maintain a safe distance of at least five feet from the cyclist.
