Emergency Radio Alerts

Tune into AM 1610 (WQFJ 525) during an emergency!

Los Alamos Emergency Management Radio broadcasts 24/7 on 1610AM. Typically, the station will play a recorded loop of the National Weather Service's weather updates for Los Alamos. The signal is audible in most of the town site, White Rock and much of the Laboratory. This is a low-power AM signal and is subject to radio propagation. You can hear it much better during the day than you can at night, especially during the cold weather. As a non-commercial station, it functions strictly as a tool for the County's Emergency Management team to disseminate information to the public.

The main purpose of the system is to provide advisories for emergencies and disruptions, such as:
  • Alerts and Notifications
  • Coordination and Control
  • Communication
  • Emergency Public Information
  • Evacuation Procedures
  • Emergency Sheltering Locations
  • Emergency Response
  • Controlled-burn Information
  • Winter-storm Warnings
  • Road Closures
  • Electrical and Telephone Outages
When there are no emergency activities in progress, the station may broadcast public service announcements in addition to NWS weather, such as:
  • Emergency Preparedness Tips
  • Health Information

CodeRED Phone Alerting System

Los Alamos County offers an emergency notification system that allows county officials to alert registered individuals to an emergency in their area. Citizens are encouraged to sign up themselves and all family members - as it is the fastest way for Emergency Management to inform the community of an emergency and any important messages that may impact them. Registered users can receive alerts via land line, cell phone or e-mail.

What do I need to do to sign up with CodeRED?

If you wish to keep only your land line as the primary method of communication in an emergency, you do not need to take any extra steps - CodeRED maintains a current list of all land line numbers. This includes residences and businesses in Los Alamos and White Rock.

If you desire to furnish the County with additional contact information, visit CodeRED to register. You can sign up cell phones, e-mail addresses and cell phone text messages. You will need to furnish a valid street address for your residence or business – no post office boxes!

How does CodeRED work?

In an emergency, our computerized system will automatically notify each device. You will know you have received a CodeRED alert when the number 866-419-5000 (Emergency Notification) appears on your caller ID. It is helpful to save this number in your phone to recognize it when a notification is issued. If you missed any message details, you can call the toll-free number back, as many times as needed.
