Scammers are targeting residents by impersonating trusted local officials, including using the name of Los Alamos Municipal Judge Elizabeth K. Allen to falsely claim that a bench warrant or summons has been issued.

These scams can be especially frightening because the perpetrators are using real names, phone numbers, and addresses they find online to appear legitimate. In some cases, scammers even "spoof" phone numbers—making it seem like the call is coming from a local agency or official.

“If you receive a call saying you owe money, have missed a court date, or must appear immediately for legal reasons, hang up and call our office directly,” says Judge Allen. “The best way to verify any claims is to contact us at 505-662-8025.”

Judge Allen shared her own experience with a similar scam:
“I once received a call claiming my electric bill hadn’t been paid and my power was about to be shut off. It sounded urgent and credible, and I jumped in my car and rushed to the municipal building—only to be told it was a scam. For those few moments, I felt the same fear and confusion that scammers are counting on to get people to act without thinking.”

These scams are becoming more sophisticated. They prey on your trust in familiar names, official-sounding language, and a sense of urgency.

Tips to protect yourself:
• Don't trust caller ID—scammers can fake phone numbers.
• Don’t share personal or financial information with unknown callers.
• Hang up and call back using a verified phone number.
• Report suspicious calls to local law enforcement or the Federal Trade Commission.

“We live in a time where caution is wise,” Allen added. “But it’s also important to know that these tactics are becoming more convincing. Stay alert, double-check before reacting, and know that local officials will never demand payment or personal information over the phone.”
