Alternative Water Harvesting
What is Alternative Water?
Alternative water is used to offset the demand of potable water. Sources include rainwater collection and secondary water reuse, such as greywater.
Rainwater harvesting is the collection and storage of rain from roofs and roof-like structures. Once the rain is on the ground, it is considered storm water and cannot be collected and utilized in the same manner.
Greywater is used water from your bathroom sink, shower/bath, and washing machine.
Greywater is not water from the kitchen sink, dishwasher, toilet, or water that has come into contact with feces. This water needs to be diverted into the sewer or septic as extensive filtering and treatment would be needed prior to safe reuse.
Alternative water sources are important in helping Los Alamos County water users conserve our water resources, especially on extraneous uses like landscaping. Greywater is generated daily and can provide a consistent source of water for landscaping.
Alternative Water Regulation in Los Alamos County
Both rainwater and greywater harvesting are permitted in Los Alamos County. Currently, there is no permit required from the Los Alamos Community Development Department for either rainwater or greywater harvesting systems. New Mexico is supportive of greywater and does not require a permit for greywater systems collecting and discharging below 250 gallons per day and meeting other minimal conditions.
