Elias Isaacson, Los Alamos County’s new community development director, officially began his role this past Monday, May 12. The County Council approved his appointment on March 11, 2025.

Isaacson brings more than a decade of public-sector leadership and planning experience. He most recently served as community development director for the City of Santa Barbara, California, where he led the city’s land use, development, and growth management efforts.

Prior to his time in Santa Barbara, Isaacson held senior leadership positions in the cities of Santa Fe and Española, including serving as planning and land use director for the City of Santa Fe.

Isaacson holds a Master of Architecture from the University of New Mexico, as well as a Master of City Planning and a Master Certificate in Urban Design and Development from the University of Pennsylvania. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from the University of Wisconsin and has completed leadership certificates through the AIA Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program and the Northern Heritage Leadership Institute. While serving as project manager and planning director for Española in 2018, he received an award for excellence in comprehensive planning from the New Mexico Chapter of the American Planning Association for the Española Comprehensive Plan.

As community development director, Isaacson will oversee the department’s five divisions: Planning, Building Safety, Economic Development, Housing and Special Projects, and Administration. The department ensures responsible development, safe construction practices, and policies that promote economic growth and an exceptional quality of life for residents.

“I’m honored to join Los Alamos County and am committed to delivering collaborative, forward-thinking solutions that reflect the community’s values,” Isaacson said. “Together, we can enhance quality of life through operational excellence, economic vitality, and environmental stewardship.”

County Manager Anne Laurent stated that she is confident that Isaacson is a strong fit for both the organization and the community. “Eli brings a thoughtful, experienced perspective to the position,” she said. “His leadership style aligns well with our team’s collaborative culture, and his deep understanding of planning and development challenges will serve the community well as we continue advancing key development initiatives.”
