Golf Course

Golf Course Club House.jpg

Los Alamos County offers a course that’s both fun and challenging to play... Nestled at the base of the Jemez Mountains atop the Pajarito Plateau, the Los Alamos County Golf Course offers a challenging 6,800-yard, par 72, 18-hole layout.

The golf course, built in 1947 by the Atomic Energy Commission, is one of the oldest 18 hole golf courses in New Mexico. Playing through ponderosa pines and cottonwoods, the sloping fairways and small greens provide a challenge to players of all skill levels. Panoramic vistas and clear, fresh mountain air at an elevation of 7,400 feet, provide a beautiful setting to enjoy the summer and have an enjoyable golf experience!

UPDATES:

In 2024 the Los Alamos County Golf Course underwent a Golf Course Improvement Project. While the project is complete, the Golf Course is not yet ready to open. Los Alamos County’s priority is allowing the new turf on the greens, bunker collars, tees, and fairways to grow in with significant root growth to support the traffic on the golf course. The optimal nighttime air temperature range for bent grass and blue grass to grow roots and shoots is 50 to 77 degrees. It usually takes 60-90 days, at these temperatures, to consistently establish new turf areas.

Please don’t ignore Frost Delays & Weather Warnings:
When frosted grass is walked, jogged, or driven on, immediate damage is not seen until about 48-72 hours after the damage has occurred, causing the grass to turn brown and die. The destruction of the grass, especially on the putting surface, opens the door for the growth of weeds and disease, thus compounding the issue and further devolving the overall condition of the course.

As the community enjoys the golf course area, whether playing golf, jogging, walking their dog, etc., please be aware of frost on the golf course. When the grass is frosted, please remain on the cart paths that connect throughout the entire golf course.

Los Alamos County has partnered with Perry Weather to install Weather Stations (WS) and Outdoor Warning Systems (OWS) at key park locations. This advanced system provides alerts when lightning is detected within 10 miles, helping park visitors take appropriate safety measures during weather events. To learn more, please visit the Los Alamos County Perry Weather Page.
