Wildfire Mitigation To Begin Oct. 14 on Cañada Del Buey Trail

For public safety and in coordination with the Los Alamos County Manager’s Office, the Los Alamos Fire Department will temporarily close a section of the Cañada del Buey Trail beginning Tuesday, Oct. 14, for the final phase of its wildfire fuels reduction project.

This third and final phase of LAFD’s ongoing mitigation efforts aimed to reduce fire risk, protect nearby neighborhoods, and preserve natural landscapes. Crews will thin 5 to 9 acres to remove ladder fuels and create a strategic fuel break. Work is expected to last about one week, through Oct. 21, weather permitting.

Trail closures—from the bridge east of Meadow Lane to Rover Boulevard—will occur only during active operations and reopen at the end of each workday. Work hours are Monday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday–Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The project will utilize robotic masticators in partnership with the Santa Fe County Fire Department’s Black Canyon Crew and Burnbot’s mastication team. Residents may notice equipment noise or activity along the trail during operations.

LAFD encourages residents to follow posted signs and respect all trail closures. The department appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as this important work is completed.
