Los Alamos County officials announce that field work for Los Alamos County’s Community Broadband Network (CBN) begins, as crews begin utility data collection to support the design of this County-led fiber-optic network. The effort will continue through September 2025 and involves assessing planned aerial and underground routes throughout Los Alamos and White Rock, including on some private property.

Crews are evaluating existing utility poles to determine whether fiber can be attached or if the poles require modification. They are also examining both existing and proposed underground conduit routes.

Hexad, working on behalf of the County's official contractor Bonfire Engineering & Construction, is conducting the field assessments.  Residents may expect to surveyors along streets evaluating utility poles and opening vaults as part of the data collection process. In some cases, Hexad’s crew will need to access a utility pole in a resident’s backyard. Affected property owners will receive a door hanger with the scheduled date and time window for entry. Residents do not need to be home while crews are present.

The Community Broadband Network is a major infrastructure initiative to improve internet access, reliability and affordability across the County. Once complete, the open-access network will enable fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) service to more than 10,000 homes and businesses, expanding the internet subscription options for community members.

The final network design is expected to go to the County Council for approval in 2026 with construction to follow.
