Los Alamos County Council adopted an ordinance in January 2025, to extend the Low-Income Taxpayer Property Tax Rebate Program for the next four taxable years (2025–2028).  Authorized under Section 7-2-14.3 of the New Mexico Statutes, the program provides eligible low-income property owners in participating communities with a rebate on their New Mexico Personal Income Tax, offsetting a percentage of their property tax payment, not to exceed $350. Eligible taxpayers can claim the rebate when filing their 2025 personal income tax returns.
To qualify for the rebate, taxpayers must meet income thresholds set by the State of New Mexico. The rebate percentage is determined based on the following adjusted gross income brackets:

Los Alamos County has participated in this program since 2001, renewing its authorization every four years. The adopted ordinance from 2025 expires after the 2028 tax year, with the new ordinance beginning in the 2025 tax year.
Each year, Los Alamos County reimburses the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department for the total amount of rebates awarded to eligible county residents. Last year this program reduced tax payments by a combined total of $10,236 for eligible taxpayers.
For more information on eligibility and how to apply, taxpayers are encouraged to visit the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department website or consult with a tax professional.
