The Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) is honored to participate in the Special Olympics Torch Run, an annual tradition that supports Special Olympic athletes and their inspiring achievements. The event will take place on May 29, 2025, beginning at 8:00 AM.

LAPD officers will gather at 7:30 AM at the Los Alamos Police Department for a special photo opportunity with local Special Olympic athletes before embarking on their run. The route will take runners eastbound on Central to 4th Street, then to Totavi, where the run resumes on NM502. Runners will continue southbound on NM285, concluding the LAPD portion of the relay at Buffalo Thunder at approximately 11:00 AM, where the torch will be passed to Pro Force. The Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) and Pojoaque Police Department have also been invited to participate in this meaningful event.

While the Special Olympics marks its 56th year, the Law Enforcement Torch Run tradition began in 1981. LAPD has proudly contributed to this cause and carried the torch since the 1990s, demonstrating its commitment to supporting athletes and fostering community involvement.

LAPD reminds commuters to be mindful, patient, and drive safely as they may encounter runners along the route. Some areas may experience slower traffic until the event concludes.
