As residents and visitors prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July, Los Alamos County officials are reminding the community that safety, courtesy, and personal responsibility extend beyond firework use and fire prevention. While fire danger remains a top concern this time of year, other safety issues and quality-of-life impacts often arise during holiday gatherings and festivities.

The County encourages all residents to be mindful of the following:

Wildlife, Pet and Livestock Safety and Well-being:

Fireworks can be a significant source of stress and fear for wildlife, pets, and livestock, leading to various negative impacts including physical injury, anxiety, and even death. Animals' sensitive hearing and instinctive flight responses are triggered by the loud noises and sudden flashes, causing them to react by trying to escape, hide, or even injure themselves. Pets can also ingest remnants of fireworks, which can be poisonous and cause serious health issues. To help, follow these simple steps:

-       Avoid setting off fireworks near livestock or wildlife habitats.

-       Consider alternatives: Explore options like quiet fireworks or light shows for celebrations.

-       Clean up after celebrating: Make sure to pick up any remnants of fireworks.

-       Keep pets indoors: Provide a safe, comfortable space for pets during fireworks.

-       Use white noise or calming music: This can help mask the sounds of fireworks.

-       Ensure pets are microchipped and wearing ID tags: This will help with reunification if they get lost.

Driving Under the Influence:

The Fourth of July is one of the most dangerous holidays for impaired driving incidents. LAPD will be increasing patrols throughout the county. Residents are urged to plan ahead for a safe ride home by using designated drivers or the Atomic City Transit (ACT) 4th of July Spectacular shuttles. Paratransit services for certified and registered customers will also be provided, please call the ACT administrative offices at 505-661-RIDE (7433) to schedule your ride. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can have life-altering consequences for you, those you love, and the community.

Noise Complaints and Disturbances:

Large parties, loud music, and late-night celebrations can disrupt neighborhoods, especially for seniors, those with young children, and individuals with sensory sensitivities. Residents are encouraged to be considerate of their neighbors.

Litter and Public Spaces:

Following celebrations in parks, public spaces, and neighborhoods, litter and overflowing trash bins can lead to unsanitary conditions and harm wildlife. Please clean up after gatherings and dispose of waste properly. “Pack it in, pack it out” applies even to local parks and picnic areas.

By celebrating responsibly and respectfully, we can help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July holiday weekend.
