The Los Alamos County Assessor’s Office announced a delay in mailing the 2025 Notices of Value (NOV) due to pending state legislation that may impact property valuations. While New Mexico law requires assessors to mail NOVs by April 1, the Property Tax Director of the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration has authorized a one-time delay of up to 30 days for Los Alamos County and several other counties.
The delay is due to two constitutional amendments passed last year that affect property tax exemptions for veterans. One amendment increases the Veteran’s Exemption from $4,000 to $10,000, applied to the taxable value of eligible residential properties. Veterans who have already claimed the exemption will see the increase applied automatically, while those who have not yet claimed it may do so by completing and filing a Certificate of Eligibility Applicationfrom the State Department of Veterans Affairs with the Los Alamos County Assessor’s Office. The increased exemption will take effect for the 2025 tax year and include a cost-of-living adjustment for future years.
A second amendment extends eligibility for the Disabled Veteran Exemption to partially disabled veterans, with an exemption amount proportional to their percentage of disability. This change will take effect for the 2026 tax year. Once details are finalized, eligible veterans can submit proof of disability to the Los Alamos County Assessor’s Office. Additional information will be published as it becomes available.
