Los Alamos County is pleased to announce Anita Barela as the new Economic Development Program Manager. Barela began her role on February 24 and will be instrumental in driving economic growth, supporting business retention and attraction, and fostering small business development within the community. Originally established by County Council several years ago, this position is designed to provide dedicated support to the County’s small business community.

Barela brings over a decade of experience working for Los Alamos County in roles related to planning, housing, and permitting. Since joining the county in 2007, she has worked extensively to guide businesses through the permitting and planning processes, ensuring they have the resources they need to open successfully. Her previous experience at the Los Alamos Monitor further strengthened her understanding of local affairs and economic trends as an ads manager. Additionally, Barela worked at a bookstore in town, R Books, for 10 years, before spending 10 years as an owner, providing her with firsthand insight into the challenges and opportunities faced by small business owners. Her entrepreneurial background gives her a unique perspective on balancing business needs with regulatory requirements, allowing her to empathize with owners while ensuring compliance with county guidelines.

Beyond her professional roles, Barela was an active member of the local merchant association in the 90s, that established events such as the popular trick-or-treat on MainStreet, which continues to thrive today.

“We are excited to have Anita step into this role,” said Dr. Shanna Sasser, Economic Development Administrator. “Her experience in government, combined with her firsthand knowledge of small business operations, makes her a valuable asset in our efforts to promote economic vitality and small business in Los Alamos.”

Barela’s appointment reflects Los Alamos County’s continued dedication to fostering a supportive and dynamic business environment. As she takes on this new role, she looks forward to collaborating with local businesses, the community, and government leaders to further economic development initiatives.
