CORRECTION: This press release previously noted the January 14, 2025 meeting was held in Los Alamos. This has been corrected to note the meeting will be held in White Rock Fire Station #3, 129 NM-4, White Rock.

Los Alamos County would like to clarify a previous press release that incorrectly indicated the County Council would discuss a potential future ordinance to ban single-use plastic bags at its next work session scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m. in White Rock Fire Station #3, 129 NM-4, White Rock. Instead, the Council is set to begin an early discussion about whether a fee should be imposed for single-use plastic bags and how any revenue generated might be utilized.
Additionally, "traffic cameras" and "hands-free cell phone use" were added to the agenda as part of the list of future potential ordinances for early discussions:
  • Single-use plastic bags: Imposing a fee.
  • Vacant or abandoned properties: Measures to discourage such properties.
  • Minimum wage: Raising the minimum wage in Los Alamos County.
  • Traffic cameras: Exploring their use to address speeding concerns.
  • Hands-free cell phone use: Requiring hands-free devices to enhance road safety.
These discussions are in the preliminary stages to allow ample opportunity for public input and Council consideration throughout the year. Should the Council decide to pursue any of these initiatives, the next steps would include drafting an ordinance, introducing it, and scheduling a public hearing for further input and consideration before adoption.

The agenda also features a continuation of the wildlife feeding ordinance discussion and a discussion on Council engagement with small businesses.
The full agenda will be published today (Friday, Jan. 10), on the Granicus website at losalamos.legistar.com. Residents can find the agenda by filtering for
“County Council – Work Session” and “2025.”
