Celebrating Public Works Week
Published on May 16, 2025
May 18–24, 2025 marks National Public Works Week, and Los Alamos County is proud to spotlight the Public Works Department and its amazing employees for all the critical and essential work they do for the community.
With 151 dedicated employees spread across nine divisions, the Public Works Department plays a critical role in building, maintaining, and improving the infrastructure and services that support the community.
The Public Works Department oversees transportation services through Atomic City Transit and Los Alamos Airport while maintenance and capital improvements of transportation infrastructure are managed through the Traffic & Streets Division and Engineering Divisions. The Department supports other county departments, programs and operations through its Capital Projects & Facilities Division and Custodial Services Division by maintaining forty-seven (47) county facilities and providing project management of major facility renovations and capital projects. Fleet Division manages the County's annual fleet replacement program and maintains over 630 heavy and light duty vehicles and equipment across all county departments. Lastly, the Environmental Services Division provides waste management, recycling and re-use programs to the community through a variety of residential and commercial collection services.
Public Work’s core mission of serving the public is exemplified in several ways: through ongoing county infrastructure improvement projects and working with an engaged community during project planning, design and construction; ongoing maintenance and management of county assets including the transportation network, county facilities and equipment; and by striving to provide exceptional customer service to the community in the areas of public transportation and solid waste management services.
From snow removal, refuse collection, to managing large-scale construction projects, the Public Works team is involved in nearly every aspect of county operations and their work is vital to the safety, functionality, and quality of life of our community.
“Public Works Week gives us a valuable opportunity to recognize the hardworking staff who quietly keep our community running,” said Eric Martinez, Public Works Director. “Their behind-the-scenes efforts are essential to the quality of life we enjoy every day in Los Alamos County.”
Join us in saying THANK YOU to the Public Works team!
