Animal Control urges caution as rattlesnake activity increases

Los Alamos County Animal Control officials urge residents to use caution when outdoors as seasonal climate conditions and recent sightings indicate an increase in rattlesnake activity. “Rattlesnakes play an important role in the local ecosystem but can pose a danger when startled or provoked,” said Los Alamos Animal Control Supervisor Theresa Phelan. “Awareness and simple precautions can go a long way in preventing incidents.” Phelan provided the following safety tips for avoiding snake encounters:
While outdoors:
- Stay on trails and avoid tall weeds or underbrush.
- Wear boots and long pants when hiking or walking.
- Never reach into holes, under rocks or into brush.
- Keep pets leashed and away from snake-prone areas.
- Stay alert and be aware of where feet and hands are placed, and check the area carefully before sitting.
- Teach children to be cautious and never approach a snake.
To make residential properties less inviting to rattlesnakes:
- Keep grass trimmed short, as snakes tend to avoid open areas.
- Remove wood piles, leaf piles and dense brush that provide cover.
- Stack firewood away from structures.
- Clear away debris, unused equipment and clutter.
- Eliminate rodent activity by securing trash and keeping pet food indoors.
Encountering a rattlesnake:
- Remain calm and back away slowly.
- Do not attempt to handle, touch or provoke the snake.
- Alert other people to the snake’s location and keep children and pets away from the area.
- Contact Los Alamos County Animal Control by calling Police Dispatch at the non-emergency number, 505-662-8222.
If bitten by a rattlesnake:
- Call 911.
- Seek emergency medical attention as soon as possible.
- Remain still to slow the spread of venom.
- Avoid using a tourniquet or attempting to extract venom.
Phalen encourages all community members to remain alert, especially during warmer months when rattlesnake activity increases.
