June 1, 2023:

2:28 am:  the EA4 feeder opened at LANL. The EA4 line serves the East Gate business Park, Los Alamos Wastewater Treatment Plant, water wells in Rendija Canyon and the Totavi Gas Station.

6:00 am: it was determined that the fault is on the LAC portion of the line. An attempt to energize the line with circuit 14 failed and caused a short outage on feeder 14.

6:30 am: LANL isolated and energized their side of the line.

7:20 am: DPU crews are still inspecting underground equipment to find the fault. The outage may last for up to 4 more hours.

10:45 am: Electric crews are still searching for the underground faulted cable. As such, restoration estimates are being pushed out 3-4 more hours.

1:00 pm: The work is on hold due to storm conditions and will resume once it is safe for crews. Customers should expect further delays.

2:35 pm: Power has been restored for all affected customers.

PREPARATION FOR AN OUTAGE:

  • If you have medical devices powered by electricity, talk to your doctor about a power outage plan and make sure you're on DPU's medical equipment alert list to be informed of planned outages.
  • Take an inventory of supplies you might want or need in a power outage, such as flashlights and extra batteries.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups, especially if you plan to use generators during outages.
  • Review FEMA's document on power outage preparedness here.

DURING AN OUTAGE:

  • Disconnect appliances, equipment and electronics in case power returns with a quick surge.
  • Be careful using generators, camp stoves and charcoal grills. These should always be used outdoors and at least 20 feet from windows.
  • Avoid opening your refrigerator and freezer.
  • Check on neighbors.
  • Build a blanket fort or read a good book.
