Golf Course Improvements

Site Visit Scheduled to Discuss Golf Course Design Concepts

The Community is invited to join Public Works staff and the golf course design team for an in-person site visit of the golf course on Thursday, November 17 to review Phase 2 design concepts on the ground and discuss other ideas presented by members of the golfing community for improving the Golf Course.

Those interested in attending are instructed to meet at 3:00 p.m. at the Golf Course Clubhouse Community Room located at 4290 Diamond Dr.  Golf carts will be available for use to travel to various areas of the course to review the areas contemplated for improvement. After the site visit, the group will reconvene at the Clubhouse for any follow-up discussion and questions.

Phase 2 of the project includes development of several design concept options for improving Holes 1 through 3, reconfiguring the driving range to improve safety, and other improvements such as practice area and cart path upgrades.

Project Information:

Budget: On January 4, 2022, Council approved a $2.5M budget for Golf Course Improvements.

Scope of Work:

Council directed the County Manager to maximize the use of these funds to develop bid ready documents to make improvements to Holes 4 through 18 and install two new restrooms. In parallel with development of improvements to Holes 4 through 18, Council further supported development of design concept options including cost estimates and to seek public input for improving Holes 1 through 3 along with the driving range/practice tee areas.  Council further moved that these design concept options consider permanent improvements for addressing safety, without impacting the teaching and learning qualities of the facility, to include evaluation of the following:

  • Expanding the course to accommodate one or two new holes so not to shorten the overall course length while minimizing impacts to existing trails and open space to the greatest extent possible.
  • Expanding the driving range to minimize or eliminate safety netting and including driving and short game practice improvements; and
  • Practice area improvements, cart path upgrades, and any other course improvements identified during the design process.

As result, the scope of work for the project was separated into two phases:

Phase 1:  Includes assembly of design drawings and construction documents for improvements to golf features on Holes 4 through 18, to include tees, bunkers, greens, permanent restrooms, targeted cart path upgrades and deferred maintenance.

Phase 2:  Includes development of several design concept options for improving Holes 1 through 3, reconfiguring the driving range to improve safety and minimize or eliminate the use of safety netting, and other improvements such as practice area and cart path upgrades.

On May 3, 2022, Council approved a contract with iConsult LLC (dba iCon Golf Studio and Grass Roots Golf Design) in the amount of $393,000 plus NM GRT for golf course design services to complete both phases of work described above.

Schedule (as of 9/15/2022):

Phase 1:

  • October 2022: Complete construction drawings and bid documents and advertise for construction bids

  • December 2022: Construction Contract Award for Council Approval

  • March 2023: Notice to Proceed

  • Summer 2023: Complete Construction

Phase 2:

  • October 2022: Design team to evaluate workshop input, refine concept options as needed and prepare council presentation.

  • November 15, 2022 (Tentative) – County Council Meeting Presentation: Present design concept options to Council for consideration and possible action. Meeting begins at 6:00pm in Council Chambers, 1000 Central Ave. Zoom link to join Council Meeting Webinar ID: 871 4597 7840https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87145977840
