The Recreation Division offers youth, teen, and adult programs at the Golf Course, Ice Rink, Aquatic Center and other facilities throughout Los Alamos County. Special events are held throughout the summer at various locations. We also coordinate various contract instructor programs such as dance, volleyball, basketball, exercise and fitness, martial arts, softball, swimming and running.

Queen, Princess and Sweetheart candidate(s) must be single, never been married, never had a child and be between the ages of Queen (17-25) Princess (14-16) Sweetheart (10-13) years inclusive, as of September 1, 2021.

Entry forms must be completed and signed by the candidate and her parents, and must be submitted to the Los Alamos County Parks, Recreation and Open Space Administrative Offices by  Wednesday, June 2nd, 2021 by 5:00pm. Applications can be returned to vie email to: or direct drop off at the Los Alamos County Aquatic Center, located at 2760 Canyon Rd, Los Alamos, NM 87544; attention to Vera Jaramillo.

A candidate must furnish her own horse; however, the mount may be borrowed.

Candidate must be a Los Alamos County Resident or must attend Los Alamos Public Schools and provide a report card.

If a tie should occur the break will be based on high score for the horsemanship portion of the contest. Decision of the judge(s) is final.

Contest Date: The contest will be held on Saturday, June 5th, 2021. The riding portion will begin at 9:00am at Brewer Arena (650 North Mesa Rd., Los Alamos, NM). The Personality portion of the competition will begin at 12:00pm at the Los Alamos Golf Course (4290 Diamond Dr., Los Alamos, NM) in the conference room. (Time subject to change depending on the number of participants)

The contest will be judge accordingly: Horsemanship 60%, Personality/Public speaking 40%.

Safety Town 2021

Safety Town 

June 7th - 11th, 2021 at Los Alamos Middle School

Los Alamos County's Child Safety Program Safety Town is designed to provide the opportunity for students entering Kindergarten to learn about safety in their school, community, and neighborhood.

Students will learn strategies to keep themselves safe and have opportunities to practice basic safety procedures in new situations. These include fire safety, bicycle safety, animal safety, gun safety, stranger safety, pedestrian safety, bus safety, and drug safety.

Safety Town is a FREE program to children entering Kindergarten.Children must be five (5) years of age by September 1, 2021

Location: Los Alamos Middle School 
Registration Begins: Monday, April 19th, 2021
Registration Closes: Wednesday, June 2nd, 2021, or when registration is full
Maximum Number of Participants: 45

The Safety Town program does not have the ability to accommodate participants that are left at Los Alamos Middle School and parents or guardians are unable to be contacted. Staff will not transport children in personal vehicles. Our final recourse, after thirty minutes has passed the designated closing time of Safety Town, will be to escort the child to the Los Alamos Police Department and contact NM Children Youth and Families to take custody of a child or children when staff is unable to contact parents or guardians.

Senior Appreciation Night (SAN) - POSTPONED

Graduating seniors and their friends are invited to celebrate the 35th year of this High School graduation celebration. Senior Appreciation Night (SAN) is co-chaired by the Los Alamos Recreation Division and the Family YMCA and begins with a BBQ at Ashley Pond on Saturday and ends Sunday morning with a Pancake Breakfast at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.

Splash-n-Dash (Cancelled)

Splash-n-dash includes a swim in the Aquatic Center and a run along Canyon Road. Swimmers, runners, beginning multi-sport
athletes, seasoned triathletes, or anyone interested can participate.

This program is not a race, but a group training event. There is no course support or protection from traffic of any kind.
You assume all risk and responsibility when participating, just as you do when doing your own workouts. Please exercise good
judgement, watch out for cars at all times, and have fun!

Registration for all distances begins at 6:30pm and closes at 6:55pm, with the first swimmer sent off at 7:00pm sharp. Due
to time and space constraints, the event is limited to the first 75 registrants. Participants under the age of 18 must come prepared
with a waiver signed by a parent.

• 400 yard pool swim, 5K run along Canyon Road
• 200 yard pool swim, 3K run along Canyon Road

Los Alamos VIRTUAL Triathlon (Oct. 2020)

Join us in the once "Secret City" to celebrate the 44th Anniversary of the oldest, continuously running triathlon. The Los Alamos Triathlon is a sprint triathlon with a unique format of bike, swim, run and is held at a starting elevation of 7,400`. The course is challenging with a rolling bike course that starts in town and takes you out along an open course surrounded by forests and mountain vistas then a return to the Walkup Aquatic Center for a 400 meter pool swim. A slightly hilly run completes the course.

Book a social distance dance party for your address for a FUN Halloween dance party on your street, parking lot, etc!!

It’s FREE for households of ALL ages in Los Alamos County, Recreation Staff will play music & dance for 15 - 20 minutes, and then move to the next registered address. Only one household reservation and please inform your neighbors. If we receive any complaints staff will pack-up and move on.
