About 19,000 people live in Los Alamos and another 6000 or so commute to work in Los Alamos from surrounding communities. Los Alamos is home to the Los Alamos National Security (LANS). LANS has facilities located throughout the County and is Los Alamos’s largest employer. During the week Los Alamos is a bustling small community.
Visitors to the community first notice the beauty of the Los Alamos mountains, mesas and valleys of the area. People comment on a feeling of safety here in Los Alamos. Police Services in Los Alamos
Los Alamos is an incorporated County (follows municipal charter), and therefore has a fairly unique distinction of being a County police department. This agency also enjoys a high standard of ethics and providing quality service to the community.
Aside from the service our officers provide to the community, the Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) also operates the County Detention Center and is responsible for Animal Control, including the operation of the County Animal Shelter.
The Detention Center and Animal Shelter are staffed with employees specifically hired and trained to fulfill that function.
The Los Alamos Detention Center is considered one of the best small jails in the state. It has even received state recognition for its exceptional standards of operation including customer service. The Detention Center is staffed by a small group of dedicated professionals and enjoys a very high retention rate for its employees.
The operation of the County Animal Shelter is the responsibility of Public Service Aids (PSAs). PSAs answer a large number of calls for service received by our agency. Since their inception, the respect, admiration and appreciation these dedicated individuals receive from the community has been phenomenal.
The Los Alamos Police Department is an agency that strives to meet or exceed the expectations of the people we serve. As a police agency in a community with a low crime rate we are afforded the opportunity to become involved with many issues and activities that would be considered non-traditional police roles. Our employees are encouraged to get out into the community we serve and live in. Sworn and non-sworn employees alike are helping address community issues. We strive to provide an environment that encourages all employees to be an approachable resource for visitors and residents of the county. We are always seeking to be involved in identifying new issues of concern in the community and participating in solutions.
