LA Green-Renewable Power
Home > Public Utilities > LA Green-Renewable Power

Updated:  September 2010
Quick Look: Learn about membership in LA Green, the DPU's renewable energy program that purchases Renewale Enegy Credits (RECs).
News Extra: Membership is open to residential, small and large commercial customers starting as low as $1.80 per month.

JOIN LA GREEN FOR A CLEANER, GREENER COMMUNITY

Renewable Power for Los Alamos

Each unit of clean renewable energy produced and sold can replace a unit of conventionally produced energy.  Through the purchase of REC's with your LA Green membership, the Los Alamos Dept. of Public Utilities aggregates local demand for renewable energy.

For as little as $1.80 per month, you can support a cleaner and greener New Mexico.  LA Green purchases Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) on behalf of our local members.  Proceeds from RECs support electric energy generated from renewable sources such as wind, solar and qualifying hydroelectric plants.

"REC-Bot" Shows How RECS Work

It is possible to reduce carbon emissions...one unit at a time...one person at a time; by joining LA Green which enables the purchase of RECs right on members' utility bills. View the animated vignette, featuring DPU's "REC-Bot" to better show how RECs function to support the production of renewable energy.  Continue reading this page for more information or check out the LA Green FAQs or read the Brochure - "LA Green Renewable Energy Program"

We invite you to join LA Green for as little as $1.80 per month.  There's no risk; you can cancel at anytime.  Here's how it works.

Rates and Membership Levels

Residential and Small Commercial Customers can join in one of two ways: blocks or at the 90 perent level.

  1. Purchase LA GREEN in “blocks” of 100 kilowatt-hours per month for a premium of $1.80 over the existing rate.
    1. The average customer will be able to purchase up to three or four blocks,
    2. The number of blocks purchased cannot exceed 90% of your minimum monthly usage from the previous 12 months,
    3. Your purchase maximum, however, will be based on your usage.
  2. Purchase 90% of your monthly electric consumption at 1.8 cents per kilowatt-hour over the existing rate.  This means that the additional monthly billing amount for LA GREEN would fluctuate based on your actual usage.

Large Commercial Customers have several ways to join, at various percentage levels.

  1. Purchase LA GREEN at 1.8 cents per kilowatt-hour over the existing rate at a level of your choice:  1 percent, 2 percent, 3 percent, 5 percent, 10 percent, 50 percent or 90 percent of your monthly usage.  The additional monthly billing amount for LA GREEN would fluctuate based on your actual usage.

How Do I Sign Up?

Call the Department of Public Utilities at 662-8333 or email us at DPU@lacnm.us, or visit us at 150 Central Park Square.   Inform the 311Customer Care Center professional which membership option of LA GREEN you would prefer. We will confirm the amount of LA GREEN you purchased and the date at which it will become effective.  Charges for LA GREEN will be reflected on a separate line on your bill.  You may cancel any time. If the cancellation notification is received less than 1 day before the upcoming billing cycle, the cancellation will be effective on the following billing cycle.
