DOE Land Transfer Parcel A-14
DOE Parcel A-14 is scheduled to be conveyed by the Department of Energy (DOE) to the County by September 30, 2009. Parcel A-14 is currently used for recreational activities, including the Los Alamos Sportsman’s Club (currently leased by DOE) and the “poor man’s” shooting range. The County has requested that both shooting facilities be excluded from the transfer agreement which will defer the expenditure of millions of dollars of clean-up by DOE.
On September 12, 2006 the NNSA completed a Cultural Resource Survey in Support of the North Canyons Sediment Investigations Report. The report consists of sediment investigations in seven canyon reaches of subject parcel. In each of the reaches the following activities were performed: staking and surveying of control points, preparation of a detailed geomorphic map, and the excavation of 20-20 holes for the purpose of describing sediment deposits. Samples from these holes were also collected for chemical analysis. The results of the cultural resources investigations, soils, etc. will be submitted to the appropriate agencies by NNSA in preparation for review by NMED and the State Historic Preservation Officer so that clearance to transfer the site to the County can hopefully be completed by September 30, 2009.
Staff is also preparing to amend the Rendija Canyon Area Master Plan that was adopted in 1987. The amendment of this plan will be in conformance with the Council's directive from the August 12, 2003 Work Session to amend the uses in the Master Plan to reflect those uses as supported by the Community. The County anticipates this item to be completed by staff in the coming months and to then work its way through the public involvement process, to the Planning & Zoning Commission with a recommendation to Council. No date has been set yet for that recommendation to go to P&Z or the Council.
