Los Alamos Police Department Chief Torpy

Thank you for visiting the Los Alamos Police Department Website.  Our department works to proactively address problems that occur in the community, in order to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone.  Please feel free to contact us at any time with your questions and concerns.  We will strive to reach a solution with you or help you find appropriate assistance elsewhere if necessary.

The Los Alamos Police Department has a historical tradition of conducting business in a professional and ethical manner.  It is my hope that through the administration of these duties the Los Alamos Police Department will continue to enjoy its good reputation based on these traditions.  It is also important to recognize that without the input and support we receive from the community, we would be far less effective as we strive to serve this community.  After your visit, should you have any questions or need further information, please contact my office by phone at (505) 662-8226, or by email at wd.torpy@lacnm.us

Police Operations

The Operations Division of the Los Alamos Police Department is responsible for Patrol, Criminal Investigations, and the Staff Services Divisions, as well as Internal Affairs. Within these main functions, officers in the Operations division may take on special assignments in addition to their regular duties.

The Departments Reserve Officer Program is also a part of the Operations Division.

Police Services

Staff Services encompasses Communications, Detention, and Animal Control. These include building maintenance, case coordination with the courts, citizen complaints, general requests for information, maintenance, building tours, and much more.

Recruitment

Geographically, Los Alamos County is located in the north-central part of New Mexico and encompasses 110 square miles. The County lies on the east side of the Jemez Mountain's at an elevation of about 7,000 feet. We enjoy four distinct but mild seasons. Being nestled among foothills and mesas, our outdoor recreation opportunities abound.

Look at the Employment Opportunities for more information on the application process.

Community Involvement

In addition to the traditional relationship of police to the community, the Los Alamos Police Department has a number of ways for the community to be involved or interface with the Department.

Animal Control

The Public Service Aide/Animal Control division provides animal control services in the County. This includes enforcement of state and local animal welfare laws and ordinances, impounding stray domestic animals (dogs and cats), and animal shelter operations. The Animal Shelter provides various services, including animal intake and release, animal care, volunteer programs, and adoption of animals.
