On occasion, citizens call LAPD to request a police patrol presence in their residential or business neighborhood. Such a patrol is either in addition to an officer’s regular patrol, or is an enhanced version of their regular patrol. This is called directed patrol. To request a directed patrol, please call LAPD Communications/Dispatch at 505-662-8222.
Sometimes individuals and organizations have equipment that they would like to donate to the Police Department. As much as the Department might like to accept your donation, County rules prohibit us from accepting any charitable donations of money, equipment, or in-kind services.
A number of community individuals receive telephone or mail solicitations for “Los Alamos Public Safety”, or the Fraternal Order of Police (a police union), or national associations that purport to look after families of officers who were killed in the line of duty. These solicitations often claim to support, in some fashion, members of the local police community.
LAPD would like you to know that neither Los Alamos County nor the Los Alamos Police Department receives any monies or assistance of any kind from such organizations. Additionally, none of our officers are members of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Periodically, LAPD will offer one or two internships for high school students. These may be after-school or summer positions. Interns must be at least 16 years of age and have written approval of their parents or legal guardians to work here. They must not be on record for juvenile convictions.
Usually, the intern assists in the Police Records or Police Administration offices. Often, their tenure includes ride-a-longs with officers or public safety aides. Such an internship provides valuable insight into the workings of the Police Department.
LAPD often gives Department tours to classroom groups, student groups, Scouting groups, community or visiting VIPs, and others. If your group or organization would like to organize a tour of this Department, please call the on duty shift commander at 505-662-8222. Given shift schedules and external events beyond our control, we suggest allowing at least one full week’s notice to arrange a Department tour.
LAPD officers appreciate the opportunity to speak to public, neighborhood, and civic organizations about matters of concern to the community. Typical topic matter might include: street safety, crime reduction, curbing domestic violence, terrorism, women’s self-defense, etc. If you would like to have a specific LAPD officer speak to your organization or community group, please do not hesitate to call that officer directly (if you know his or her name) at 505-662-8222.
If you are not requesting a specific officer, contact the on duty shift commander at the contact information below. Please plan ahead and allow at least two weeks advance notice to arrange a speaking engagement.
