August Youth Services calendar of events

Music & Movement!

Music and Movement program (M&M) is now here for you on Saturdays! Join us at Mesa Public Library each Saturday morning for wiggles and singing and parachutes and musical instruments and big fun. Kids ages 0-5 are welcome- make sure you bring your parents, so everyone can clap along!  Our schedule runs roughly with the public school schedule- we take time off when they do- so check the calendar or call 662-8258 if you have any doubt about a program time or day.

Hit the WaL! (Wednesdays the Library)

Wednesday, September 8 marks the return of a favorite YS offering for grades 1-6! Join us in the Youth Services 1st floor program room at 2:00 p.m. for a variety of crafts and games.  We'll have a craft to share, a video game blasting (either Dance Dance Revolution or MarioKart) and some board games for you to enjoy. This program lasts about an hour, depending on attendance and staffing. We follow the Los Alamos Public Schools schedule and take program breaks when the school is out.

Homework Help
Tutoring Form

Tutoring and homework help is available at Mesa Public Library some afternoons. Return a complete tutor form to Youth Services or e-mail it to us at ysweb@lacnm.us  The program is recommended for children in grades 1-8.  During the school year, students may come by weekday afternoons, Monday-Thursday, to Mesa Public Library or by appointment to White Rock Branch Library for free homework help provided by our expert high school students. Get together a group of friends and add a tutor: it (almost) makes studying fun!

Junior Volunteer Program
Volunteer form

Now is the time to consider being a junior volunteer here at Mesa Public Library. Get your application in fast- the program starts September 20th, 2010.  Students develop work experience for job resumes; they earn volunteer hours for awards or scout badges, etc. Students can earn t-shirts and snacks.  Volunteers work with a high school student to make copies, prepare craft materials, run errands, recycle, decorate, make flyers, etc. You may download the form above and drop it at the Youth Services desk, or email it to us at ysweb@lacnm.us  Questions?  Please contact the Youth Services area at Mesa 662-8258.

Summer Reading is wrapping up this month!

A request from the New Mexico State Library for parents of summer readers: Please help the New Mexico State Library evaluate the 2010 Summer Reading Program. Your answers on this survey will help obtain funding for the program as well as improve it. Thanks for your time.

Great services for parents and teachers too!

Parents, did you know you have an entire library at your fingertips while at home? The library catalog is online 24/7 to find materials, check your account, reserve books, and access the phenomenal online databases to help kids find science projects, timelines, maps, and more, all arranged in age appropriate sections from K-12. Adult level academic and special interest databases, such as auto repair and genealogy, are available too. Try the Biography Resource Center that features comprehensive biographical information on over 340,000 people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas.

Teachers visiting our website may view our guidelines for class visits and find our Materials Request Form and School Assignment Notification Form, which can help teachers who are doing special units such as historical fiction, biographies, or need extra copies of a particular book. The library can then use these forms and information to have requested and appropriate materials ready for teachers and students as assignments approach.

Check out our themed “Storybook Kits” which feature ten individual, unique titles about a certain theme (Spanish-English Language Learning, Colors, Seasons, Farm Animals, Behavior/Social Interaction). These kits may be checked out as one item and used for three weeks.

Teachers and parents (and kids and teens too) are invited to stop by our Youth Services reader’s advisory blog Check It Out! which will feature reviews of new material from library staff and library patrons.  You can even submit your own reviews to be featured on the site! Just email ysweb@lacnm.us with your reviews.

Library Behavior

The libraries are for everyone to enjoy. To help make visiting the library a great experience for all patrons, a pamphlet outlining guidelines for appropriate behavior is available at all service desks in both libraries. Kids are always welcome when they want to use library services or attend programs. If children do not intend to use library services, other venues in Los Alamos provide alternative activities for them.

Hours, including holiday hours and closures.

The hours at both Mesa Public Library and White Rock Branch Library are Monday through Thursday 10 AM-9 PM, Friday 10 AM-6 PM, Saturday 10 AM-5 PM and Sunday 12 PM-5 PM.
