Environmental Sustainability
Los Alamos County and the Department of Public Utilities are working to create a more sustainable community. The goal of this initiative is to foster a vibrant, healthy and growing community without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
Sustainability Plan Draft
Los Alamos County is committed to creating a more sustainable community - a place where sound fiscal and environmental decisions are made every day, enabling current and future generations to enjoy a clean environment while conserving our natural resources. The Sustainability Plan looks at diverse sustainability indicators including energy usage, water usage, waste and recycling, alternative transportation and parks and open space.
Energy and Water Conservation Plan Draft
The Department of Public utilities created the Energy and Water Conservation Plan to focus on conserving the utility commodities they deliver to the community which includes water, electricity and natural gas. This plan also meets state requirements mandated by the Office of the State Engineer as a condition of approval of the County’s water rights, and federal requirements as part of Los Alamos County’s section of the Joint Integrated Resource Plan with the Department of Energy.
Glass Drop-Off Recycling
On September 29th glass recycling will return to Los Alamos with a drop-off program. Yellow glass recycling dumpsters will be placed at Sullivan field and Overlook Pak Convenience Center for the recycling of glass bottles and jars of all colors. Glass bottles and jars will also be accepted at the Eco Station. Click to learn more about this new program.
Los Alamos County Fire Stations Significantly Reduce Energy Usage as a Result of Energy Conservation Competition
After a six-month fire department energy conservation competition that approached the heat and intensity of a five-alarm fire the winner is . . . Fire Station 4! Fire Station 4, located near the Los Alamos County Golf Course, reduced their electricity usage an average of 30% per month. Click to read the full press release.
