The businesses and organizations of Los Alamos County help enhance the lifestyle of its citizens.  This is an important and appreciated service, but it is imperative to ensure that this enhancement is not coming at the expense of future generations.  By integrating the concepts of sustainability into their operations businesses and organizations can make sure that their actions will create a better community for current and future generations.  Adopting sustainable business practices can also help improve the bottom line.  Clicking on the icons above will provide information about specific actions that can be taken in order to become a more sustainable business or organization.

Sage Cottage Montessori School photo
Sage Cottage Montessori School located in White Rock promotes sustainability in and out of the classroom.  Outside the classroom the school strives to reduce their environmental impact by purchasing renewable energy from the Department of Public Utilities LA Green program and conserving water by partially closing sink inlets.  A comprehensive recycling program that recycles paper, plastic, aluminum cans, cell phones and ink cartridges helps further reduce the school’s environmental impact.
In the classroom the teachers of Sage Montessori School teach their students to re-use or recycle materials whenever possible.  These lessons are then demonstrated through the use of re-use materials in classroom projects and the use of corporate waste products their as learning tools made possible through their membership in UNM Wemagination Center.  Their curriculum also includes solar energy, gardening, and composting projects.

Primak Builders Inc., a local residential construction company, is committed to sustainability through its green building philosophy and practices.  Recently, Primak Builders designed and built the first Energy Star rated home in Los Alamos.  Energy Star is one of three methods for certifying a home under construction to be green.  Certified green projects utility costs are cut 15% to 100%, depending on what elements are incorporated.  Primak builders "green homes" typically save 40%, costing an additional 5 to 7% to build.  At today's energy prices, the consumer payback is usually under 10 years.
Going the extra mile on remodeling projects, Primak Builders donates all usable "throw away" materials to Habitat for Humanity, giving new life to items that normally go to the landfill.
Primak Builders Philosophy, green and otherwise: "Live simply so others might simply live."
