LAFD provides what is known as a “fire service based” EMS system. Six ambulances respond within three ambulance districts in accordance with a predetermined response schedule. All firefighters are, at minimum, licensed EMT-Basic. Emergency medical service is on a 24-hour basis and provides Basic (BLS) through Advanced Life Support Services (ALS).
The EMS mission is primarily emergency response, although non-emergency, and inter-facility transfers to outlying hospitals, and other medical facilities occur routinely. There is a full-time Medical Director (Laura Kay MD) who provides programmatic oversight and training of the various components of the EMS system. In addition, there is an EMS Chief (Battalion Chief Jerome M. Finn) who provides full time EMS system program management.
EMS Mission
The mission of the Los Alamos Fire Department’s EMS Division is to provide the highest level of emergency medical care achievable to anyone requesting this service. The EMS Division shall make every effort to address the concerns of its customers, both internally and externally, in order to achieve the best outcome in patient survival and quality of life possible.
EMS Training
 |
The seven LAFD members and our guest student have completed a full week-and-a-half of the 5-week EMT-B course. This time has been spent learning the basics of anatomy and physiology, respiratory emergencies and musculo-skeletal trauma. So far all of the students are making outstanding progress and we are optimistic about their continued success. The students will be spending some time at LAMC to get to know some of our partners in health care. |
