Ashley Pond Park Improvements - Update June 17, 2013

Subject: Ashley Pond Park Improvements - Update June 17, 2013

Content TEXT format: The County’s contractor, RMCI, has completed mobilization and it is anticipated that they will begin excavation of the pond on Wednesday.

Last week, all remaining ducks were gathered and transported to facilities at the County’s Pajarito Cliffs Site, where they will remain until the project is completed. Care of the ducks is being provided by the Duck Buddies, a local group. The pond was drained and fish removed by the end of the day on Saturday. Approximately 60 fish, some 24” long, were removed and taken to the Eco-Station. With the completion of this work, the Parks Division’s involvement with the pond construction perimeter is finished.

The County announced last week that the pond would not be re-stocked in November; however, this is incorrect. The pond will be restocked using a special “fish recipe” to safely re-introduce aquatic life into the pond that is beneficial to its operation as well as providing an attraction. The types of fish include sunfish, catfish, bass and trout. Some of the fish will be stocked this fall, with others being added in the spring, as conditions for cold and warm water ponds and the type of fish that can be introduced may vary from season to season.

A quiet meetings week? Yep.

No Council meeting, and no public meetings planned beyond standing Boards and Commissions meetings. The Council will resume their regular session schedule on Tuesday, June 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the new Council Chambers of the Municipal Building (1000 Central Avenue).

NEWS:

County Modulars: Moving Out of Los Alamos

With the move to the Municipal Building completed, the temporary offices located in various modulars at Lavy Lane on Trinity Drive and in the parking lot at Ashley Pond Park are being returned to the leasing company. The County had housed employees in the rented space since 2007. The move should not disrupt traffic and will take place during off-peak commuter hours. Read the News Release here:
http://www.losalamosnm.us/news/Pages/CountyModularsMovingOut.aspx

Flight Schedule Changes at LAM

Los Alamos Airport (LAM) has adjusted three of its flights to better serve customers on the trip to/from Albuquerque's Sunport. If you haven't tried the new airline service, what are you waiting for? Just $49 each way with a flight time of about 20 minutes - and we have free parking at our airport - which is a big savings, too! View the new schedule here:
http://www.flylosalamos.com/

Work at Ashley Pond Park

The contractor began mobilizing at the site last week. Fencing is up around the pond perimeter for construction safety reasons. The park is still open and Summer Concerts will still be held there - but will occur further west on the open lawn where the former municipal building was located. Initial excavation of the pond is set for Tuesday, June 18 (and we're all wondering what kinds of things they might find in the bottom of the pond once it's drained...)

Are you a first-time home buyer? Looking for a house this summer?

Ban on Sale & Use of Certain Fireworks Still in Effect

Thinking of purchasing fireworks? Please review the link below first. It's so dry outside that the Fire Department has placed this item on the Council's agenda for June 25, as they may wish to extend a current fireworks restriction another thirty days past July 4th. At this point, LAFD crews are monitoring upcoming weather conditions and coordinating closely with the Kiwanis Club so the Club can host a safe public fireworks display on Independence Day at Overlook Park in White Rock. View the proclamation on fireworks restrictions:

Keep Sidewalks Clear!

Summer is here and that means vegetation is beginning to grow up (and sometimes over!) public sidewalks. The County cleared sidewalk paths of overgrown vegetation and trees many years ago - but now it's up to property owners to maintain that clear path for pedestrians. The County has established guidelines for clearing with a goal that two people should be able to walk safely side by side when on a public sidewalk. Review the guidelines here:

TREASURES & TIDBITS

Get out and hike (or bike) this weekend!

If you're a summer student intern at LANL, or, new to Los Alamos - did you know that we offer a FREE trails map to guide you to our fabulous Los Alamos and White Rock trails? Download it on line on the link below - or pick up a copy in the vestibule of the new Municipal Building at our NEW public information self-serve counter (west side/parking lot entrance).
